Bench grinders are predominantly used to sharpen your hand tools or take on other forms of rough grinding including rounding and shaping metal. You need to make sure you have the right type of abrasive wheel in place for the task. That is, shaping metal in preparation of welding is going to require a different wheel than sharpening a drill bit or hand tool.
Additionally, a wheel meant to grind steel will not work well with a softer metal. If the soft metal gets stuck in the wheel, the grinding heat will expand the metal and potentially ruin the wheel.
Other types of wheels, such as wire-brush wheels, can be incorporated to polish work pieces.
