The purpose of these tools is in the name: detail. Also known as mouse or corner sanders, detail sanders can smooth out corners and tight spaces. A detail sander is a hand-held tool with a triangular piece of sandpaper attached to a small vibrating head, although many attachments are available specific to certain applications.

Detail sanders are easy to control and give a smooth finish in a tight spot, but can be frustrating in open areas. Almost any other sander will be more efficient than a detail sander when the vast majority of material needs sanding.
