A jointer will let you create flat edges on boards in preparation of joining them into wider boards. With the added ability to straighten bowed boards, jointers are convenient in a number of industries and applications, such as carpentry and cabinetry.
You may need to use a planer in conjunction with a jointer, so it may be worth looking into a jointer/planer before making a purchasing decision. However, if you don’t need the functions of a planer, a jointer will handle everything you need.
